Jean Pierre Filiu will share with us his views on the evolution of Al-Qaeda since 9/11.
How has Al-Qaeda changed in the past ten years? How is it organized today? What is the global jihad’s influence on the world’s geopolitical situation? These are some of the questions Professor Filiu will address in light of the latest developments in the North African region.

 Jean-Pierre Filiu (Paris, 1961), a historian and an arabist, is professor at Sciences Po (Institute of Political Studies), in Paris. He is visiting professor at Columbia School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) during the spring 2011 semester and was visiting professor at Georgetown School of Foreign Service (SFS) during the fall 2008 semester. His research focuses on contemporary Islam and the Arab world, where he spent most of his adult life, both in the Middle East and in North Africa.

Filiu authored several books at Fayard, in Paris, including « Mitterrand and Palestine » (2005), « The Boundaries of jihad » (2006) and “The nine lives of Al-Qaeda” (2009). His « Apocalypse in Islam » (University of California Press, 2011) was awarded the main prize by the French History Convention. His works and articles have been published in a dozen languages. He delivers every Sunday a “viewpoint” in Tangiers-based Médi-1 radio, widely listened all over North Africa.
